BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China has a total number of 2,971 company groups by the end of 2008 and their combined assets rose 19.7 percent from the previous year to more than 40 trillion yuan (5.86 trillion U.S. dollars), the China Industrial Information Issuing Center said Saturday.     Corporate management of these company groups is improving, according to the center.     Affected by the global financial crisis and economic slowdown, profit of these company groups decreased by 22.5 percent in 2008 year on year, the first annual drop since 1997, said the center without giving specific figures.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Baosteel Group, China's leading steelmaker, announced on Monday its acquisition of 15 percent stake in Aquila Resources, an Australian iron ore and coal company.     The 286 million Australian dollar purchase (265 million U.S. dollars) has made Baosteel the second largest shareholder of Aquila, said the Chinese company based in Shanghai.     The transaction is an important strategy for Baosteel's overseas expansion by securing long-term supply of critical raw materials for its steel making business, said the company.     The deal will help the Australian company source low-cost financing from Chinese institutions to support its projects.     Tony Poli, executive chairman of Aquila said on the company website, "The company now looks forward to developing its relations with Baosteel to the mutual benefit of both companies."     The deal was approved on November 13 by China's top economic regulator, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and it was Baosteel's first large strategic investment in a foreign public company.     The two companies signed an agreement on the acquisition in August this year and got nod in October by Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB), which limited Baosteel's stake in the Australian company to the utmost 19.9 percent.     Under the terms of the deal, Dai Zhihao, a vice president of Baosteel, will step in as a board member of the Australian coalminer.

BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday called on health authorities to ensure safety in the production, storage, transportation, and inoculation process of the vaccines against A/H1N1 influenza, for the health of the public.     Li made the remarks when visiting the Beijing-based National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products, where the country's self-developed vaccines against the A/H1N1 flu are tested. A total of 242 patients were in critical conditions, the Ministry of Health said.     As of Monday, the country has inoculated more than 87 million people with A/H1N1 vaccines. China is the world's first country to issue a production license for the vaccines against the A/H1N1 flu.

HANGZHOU, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States said Thursday they would not stage any new trade protection measures against each other, a significant step which lays the groundwork for the presidential summit next month.     "Both sides agreed on not introducing any new trade protection measures against each other as both vowed to oppose trade and investment protectionism and observe the related consensus of the G20 summit," Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said later Thursday. "The only way to measure our efforts is whether the agreements really benefit people across the Taiwan Strait."     In the previous three rounds of talks since June 2008, the two sides reached nine agreements concerning transport, trade, tourism, cooperation in finance and fighting crime among other issues.     "We have done many things in the past one and half years that should have been done long before. We will work with our Taiwan counterparts to make sure the agreements are implemented and to close loopholes in them." Chen said.     Chiang Pin-kun said Taiwan and mainland must jointly tackle economic challenges, and the establishment of a cross-Strait economic framework should not be delayed.     He called on both sides to contribute to economic prosperity and development as well as long-term peace and stability.     The agreements reached at previous meetings between SEF and ARATS had brought substantial benefits for the normalization of cross-Strait communication and benefited people on both sides, he said.     However, there was room for improvement and both sides needed to carry out further negotiations, he said.     He called for both sides across the Taiwan Strait to continue efforts to push for the development of systematic talks and promote cross-Strait communication and cooperation.     The ARATS and SEF are expected to discuss future negotiations on the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), although talks on the agreement were not on the agenda of this meeting.     The two sides reached a basic consensus on avoiding double taxation and strengthening taxation cooperation in a preparatory meeting Monday afternoon. BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Justices in China's Supreme People's Court, as well as judges in local courts, will start working side by side with anti-corruption supervisors from Monday.     On Friday, 14 full time supervisors were installed in the Supreme People's Court (SPC) to oversee judges, court-order enforcers and other court staff.     The SPC said in a statement Sunday that 24,521 anti-corruption supervisors had been in place in 2,392 courts across the country.     In local courts, the posts of anti-corruption supervisors were concurrently held by senior judges, it said.     The system was born out of the efforts "to better combat corruption and redress injustices in a timely manner," said Shen Deyong, SPC executive vice-president.     The Supreme People's court had issued a tentative measure to facilitate coordination between the internal check system and external supervision departments, said the statement.     It also said courts across China would work to optimize the system with measures such as appointing more supervisors and setting up regular exchange and appraisal systems for anti-corruption supervisors.
