BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Qingdao Haier Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese household electric appliance producer, announced Thursday evening that its net profit in the third quarter rose 48.88 percent year on year to 300.7 million yuan (44.03 million U.S. dollars).     Its net profit in the first three quarters increased 28.7 percent from a year earlier to 966.4 million yuan, the firm said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.     The eastern Shandong Province-based company attributed the net profit hike to reduced inventory and improved assets quality.     Equities of the Shanghai-listed firm added 1.28 percent to 18.17 yuan per share Thursday.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua)-- Premier Wen Jiabao admitted Sunday that it'd be good if lending by Chinese banks had not been growing on a too large scale as a result of the government's immediate response to the global financial crisis."It would be good if our bank lending was more balanced, better structured and not on such a large scale," he said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency.     Wen said the State Council had noticed the problem in the middle of the year and moved to correct it. "It has been improving in the second half of this year," he said. GENEVA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- China will maintain the stability of its Renminbi (RMB) exchange rate all along, which does good for the world economic recovery, Commerce Minister Chen Deming said on Monday.     China's exchange rate reform has continued smoothly, and the value of RMB has risen by some 20 percent against the U.S. dollar since 2005, Chen told reporters in Geneva, where he is attending a ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization.     Despite the impact of the global financial crisis and all kinds of other difficulties, the Chinese government has actively tried to boost domestic consumption and stimulate imports, Chen said. BEIJING, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- China would not let the yuan gain against the U.S. dollar in the short term, experts said here Thursday when commenting on the latest quarterly report of China's central bank.     People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, said Wednesday in its quarterly report of monetary policy, for the first time, that the bank would improve the mechanism of the exchange rate determination "based on international capital flows and movements in major currencies".     "The new wording showed that China would reduce speculation and strengthen risk control in the future, but it did not necessarily suggest a change in the yuan's exchange rate policy," said Tan Yaling, an expert with the China Institute for Financial Derivatives at Peking University.     "The future mechanism would reflect China's own concerns and status," she said.     China's foreign exchange reserves surged to a record 2.27 trillion U.S. dollars as of the third quarter of 2009, up 19.26 percent year on year, PBOC reported in September.     According to Yin Jianfeng, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), a government think tank, it is natural for the central bank to pay more attention to increasing international capital inflows.     "Excessive liquidities are pouring into China as the country is witnessing rapid recovery while the economic condition is still weak in the western world," he said.     Zuo Xiaolei, chief economist with Galaxy Securities, said the central bank's report indicated the government had raised concerns that such inflows would put China under huge external pressure for yuan appreciation.     Zuo predicted that as the U.S. dollar depreciates further, excessive liquidity will be a global issue in future, which would in turn pull up China's foreign reserve to a new level.     China has been facing calls to let its own currency gain against the dollar since it recovered quickly from the financial crisis, especially after it reported the positive economic data of last month, however, experts had expressed different opinions.     "Sudden upward movement in the yuan would slow China's economic growth when the country's exports just showed signs of recovery, "Tan said, "All in all, the exchange rate policy should not be subjected to other countries but serve our own economy."     Also, the pace of yuan's appreciation should be determined not only by the foreign trade surplus, according to Zuo Xiaolei.     The balance of China's internal development should also be taken into consideration, including the massive stimulus package and the accumulated liabilities of local governments, she said.     China's exports slid 13.8 percent year on year to 110.76 billion U.S. dollars in October, said the National Bureau of Statistics Wednesday. The decline rate was 1.4 percentage points lower than that of September.

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's anti-graft chief He Guoqiang on Tuesday urged discipline and supervision authorities to press ahead with the building of a clean government and strengthened efforts in corruption prevention.     He, secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said in a meeting that efforts should be made to handle people's complaints and embrace innovation in the establishment of anti-corruption mechanism.     He asked discipline and supervision authorities to combat extravagance, intensify crackdown on the practice of "small coffer", which refers to fund, securities and assets that should be but fail to be listed into the account books of CPC and government organizations in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.     He also called for authorities to make public Party affairs, especially at grassroots organizations, and investigate and prosecute corruption cases.     Efforts should be made to expand channels for the general public to be involved in anti-corruption endeavor, said He, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao made five proposals on promoting Sino-U.S. relations and tackling delicate issues of common concern while meeting with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama in Beijing Tuesday.     Obama, who is in Beijing for a four-day state visit to China, agreed with Hu on the proposals, reiterating that the United States does not seek to contain China's rise and that he welcomes China as a "strong, prosperous and successful member of the community of nations."     FURTHER STRATEGIC MUTUAL TRUST     Hu called on the two countries to continue to increase strategic mutual trust with prerequisite of respect for each other's core interests and major concerns.     He hailed Obama's statement that the United States sticks to the one-China policy and hoped that the United States would "properly handle" the Taiwan issue and forbid "Tibet independence" and "East Turkistan" forces from using U.S. territory to cover their anti-China separatist activities.     In Hu's words, China and the United States should not be opponents, but partners that trust each other and cooperate sincerely.     "The development of China is an opportunity for all nations, including the United States," Hu said. "It is not a challenge, let alone a threat."     MAINTAIN EXCHANGES AT ALL LEVELS     Hu said China and the United States should maintain different levels of communication and consultation on major issues in a timely manner through different channels, including exchange of visits, talks and meetings on multilateral occasions.     The two countries should further substantiate the results of the first round of Sino-U.S. Strategic Economic Dialogue and start soon to prepare for the second round of talks in Beijing next summer, Hu said, calling the dialogue an important platform to enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.     STEP UP MACRO CONTROL     It is "necessary" for China and the United States to step up cooperation on coordinating macro economic and financial policies, pushing forward reforms in the international financial system and improving global economic governance structure, Hu said.     He also raised the issue of trade frictions, voicing hope that the United States would loosen restrictions on its export of hi-tech products to China as soon as possible, while recognizing China's market economy status and facilitating expansion of trade and investment cooperation.     "Under the current circumstances," Hu said, "the two countries should more resolutely oppose and resist trade protectionism in any form."     ADVANCE EXCHANGES, COOPERATION IN VARIOUS AREAS     The other areas proposed by Hu for further cooperation between China and the United States include infrastructure, climate change and clean energy, and exchange of students.     He said China is willing to work with the United States on space exploration and construction of high-speed railways.     The two sides should take the launch of the joint clean energy research center as a turning point and deepen cooperation on energy saving, emissions reduction, renewable energy and treatment of environmental pollution, Hu said.     China is also willing to increase counter-terrorism cooperation with the United Stats on a basis of mutual benefit and hold dialogues with the United States on issues of human rights and religions based on the principle of equality, mutual respect and non-interference with each other's internal affairs, said Hu.     WORK TOGETHER TO MEET GLOBAL, REGIONAL CHALLENGES     Hu proposed that the two countries should continue to work together on global and regional hot issues in light of the benefit gained in recent years by cooperating on climate change, nuclear non-proliferation, crackdown on transnational crimes, disaster relief and prevention and treatment of contagious diseases.

Despite the tight fiscal condition, China beefed up the income and welfare enjoyed by the retirees and low-income residents, and unveiled the significant health-care reform in 2008, Wen told Xinhua in an exclusive interview.     "We will overcome every difficulty to well implement the health-care reform which has close bearing on people's health," he said. It is not a big sum, but it begins a new era," he said.     Since the global economic crisis broke out at the end of last year, the Chinese government has timely implemented a stimulus package which stepped up financial support and policy incentives to improve people's well-being and stimulate domestic demand, in order to shore up economic recovery.     China has spent 728.46 billion yuan (107.13 billion U.S. dollars) to enhance education and medical systems, social security, job promotion, affordable housing construction, and cultural development. The investment was an increase of 165.33 billion yuan from a year ago.
